TAN AN COMMUNE, THANH HA DISTRICT, HAI DUONG PROVINCE EXPLORES HOUSEHOLD SOLID WASTE SEPARATION AND ORGANIC COMPOSTING MODEL
On January 16, 2025, the Center for Environment and Community Development (CECoD), in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Tan An Commune, Thanh Ha District, Hai Duong Province, organized a training session for 108 household representatives on household solid waste (HSW) separation at source and organic waste composting.
The activity, hosted by the Tan An Commune People’s Committee with support from CECoD and environmental experts, aimed to address environmental pollution caused by improperly managed HSW, which affects soil, water, and air quality. The initiative also supports the implementation of waste separation requirements under the 2020 Law on Environmental Protection while enhancing recycling efficiency. Since organic waste accounts for a large proportion of household waste but is often underutilized, the training focused on guiding households to separate waste according to legal requirements into organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable categories, and practicing composting techniques to turn organic waste into natural fertilizer—improving soil quality and boosting crop yields.
The program engaged 108 participants, including farmers and households, with technical training provided by CECoD and environmental experts. Results showed that local people understood the benefits of waste separation and composting, and committed to applying the practices in reality—helping to reduce the volume of waste sent to landfills, recover resources from organic waste, and protect the local environment.
The training in Tan An Commune not only raised community awareness and promoted the importance of waste separation and treatment at source, but also demonstrated recognition from both the Tan An Commune People’s Committee and Thanh Ha District People’s Committee of the household-level waste separation and composting model successfully piloted in Tien Vy Hamlet.
A highlight of this activity is that the training was initiated and co-organized at the request of Tan An Commune authorities after witnessing the effectiveness of the waste separation and composting model implemented in Tien Vy Hamlet, Thanh Ha Commune. This shows the potential for replication and sustainability of the model, allowing other localities to adopt it even after the Initiative concludes.
